my journey and why i speak out
Hear it first hand
Hey there! I’m Dee - a proud New Jersey native, community advocate, and writer with a heart for education, equity, and real talk. Whether it’s through volunteering, supporting small businesses, or writing about the issues that matter most, I’m passionate about building stronger communities and sparking meaningful, connected conversations.
What started as a way to express my experiences during a debated volunteer role in 2024 quickly turned into something much bigger. My blog became a platform not just for sharing my unique journey as a school volunteer, former school-based parent/teacher group leader, and community partner - but also a space to unpack deeper truths about the systems we navigate and the relationships that shape how we move through the world.
From the classroom to the community boardroom, I’ve seen firsthand how social issues and human connection intersect - and how both policies and personal dynamics can either push us forward or hold us back. Whether it’s how leadership impacts families or how unspoken tension between peers stalls collaboration, I believe these are the conversations that truly matter - and I’m not afraid to start them.
I remain committed to uplifting the voices of Black individuals, celebrating our history, and envisioning better futures - all while honoring the human side of activism: the relationships we build, the trust we restore, and the love that keeps us grounded. Because real change? It begins with connection. With understanding. With heart.
Outside of my accounting profession, I continue to support schools and families through initiatives that bring people together - from organizing Montclair events like Hillside Rocks and Bike & Walk to School Day, to uplifting Black excellence through local celebrations and programs. I’ve also led collaborative efforts that launched new student enrichment programs, all grounded in a belief that relationships are the foundation of every thriving community.
I believe schools and communities help shape our futures - but so do friendships, breakups, boundary-setting, and the courage it takes to speak your truth in your personal life. That’s why I also use my platform to explore the social and emotional dynamics that define how we love, lead, and relate to one another.
Growth isn’t always easy, and speaking out sometimes comes with pushback. But every challenge brings clarity - and clarity opens the door to connection. That’s what this space is all about: truth, community, and the power of honest relationships.
